Yoga – Not About Becoming a Pretzel

Pearls For Life: Family Yoga
Pearls For Life: Family Yoga

There is, without fail, one response I always get when I ask people if they want to try yoga: I could never do yoga, I’m not flexible.

I think people who are not familiar with yoga have this idea that the object of the practice is to twist themselves into a pretzel and find Nirvana. That is not what yoga is about. At least not the pretzel part.

Yoga is not about straining the body, it’s not a karmic cross-fit, it’s not a one-dimensional health plan. Yoga is more of a foundational practice that affects many areas of your life. Yes, yoga as a physical practice, stretches, relaxes and strengthens the body, but as a mental exercise, it refocuses your thinking and calms your mind as much as your nerves.

Yoga begins as a physical activity but when drawn into yourself, becomes a key lifestyle element. It changes your thinking, your relationships with people, your eating habits.  Can you imagine how it can affect your family dynamics when practiced and enjoyed as a unit?

At Pearls For Life; Family Yoga we teach yoga as a family affair. It is a time for moms, dads or caregivers to relax and connect with their children. Those who have never experienced family yoga (and yes, it’s an experience) can’t imagine kids staying calm for more than 2 minutes, but the practice has a wonderful soothing effect. Children, even babies, remain engaged, calm and connected throughout the practice.

Take time to connect with those you love, in calm and meaningful moments that can seep into every area of your life. Check out our new family yoga schedule and come by and give it a try.
