As I mentioned last week, people always assume you have to be flexible to do yoga. Not true. Yoga is about balance, not about straining yourself beyond your body’s abilities. It’s not like the day after “leg day” at the gym. It’s about strengthening you where you are: pregnant, new parents, post injury, elderly, childhood. 

Yoga is for everyone. 

Yes, I do a lot of promoting Pearls For Life;Family Yoga, of Encinitas as a family affair – that is my heart, but not my only focus. 

Pregnancy: Ask any pregnant woman and she’ll tell you that she is going through a lot of changes – every bit of her. Her body is growing, expanding, stretching and yoga is a great tool to ease sore muscles and help the body adjust to this change. Not only does prenatal yoga help a woman’s lower back adjust to the weight of the baby and the strain on the pelvic region, it also prepares her for labor and delivery. 

New Born Yoga: Fatigue is a familiar “friend” in the life of a new mom. Yoga gives mom and baby a time to stretch and connect in a peaceful environment with other new parents. People who haven’t experienced baby yoga can’t imagine a baby interacting with their parent or caregiver, but they do. It’s difficult for moms to truly relax, because while they’d love to nap while the baby does, they are constantly reminded of the working, washing, drying, cleaning, cooking, etc. that “should” be done.  Yoga provides an opportunity for new parents to leave the house and enjoy their baby and simply relax and breathe.

Restorative/Chair Yoga: As I mentioned earlier, yoga is not for the physically fit, but it can be an excellent tool for the broken. If you have endured a recent injury, surgery or are simply aging, yoga is an excellent healing tool. Through gentle moves, you can help regain strength. If you are simply growing older, yoga can help maintain balance and strength that may prevent injury from falling and help the body without the strain of impact to the back or hips.
