Yoga in the Workplace

Pearl for Life

At Pearls For Life; Family Yoga, we understand that for many people, yoga is a way of life. It’s their spiritual, physical, emotional, psychological and sociological lifestyle, but for others, it’s just a part of life. I’m sure for those who have embraced yoga as a lifestyle; the adoption of just a segment of the practice can be irritating. It’s like when people think Harry Potter is cool, but don’t ask them to name all the books chronologically, classify each wizard into houses at Hogwarts and recite 20 spells. They like Harry Potter, but it isn’t EVERYTHING. Geesh!

I think it’s important to taste a bit of everything; it makes you well-rounded and knowledgeable on a global level. Last week a friend told me about a yoga class she took at her corporate job during the lunch hour. Now diehard yogis may balk at the idea of corporate yoga, but personally, I thought it was great. What a great way to be introduced to the practice; although she is experienced in yoga, my friend said it was the perfect, unintimidating introduction to the practice for any newbies.

The class was taught by an employee who wanted to share the practice with her fellow workers, offering her lunch hour a few times a week. The resulting class was inviting and offered a very healthy way to spend an hour in the middle of the day. My friend was delighted to be able to take that time and stretch her body, release the tension that sitting at a desk causes and to relax her mind. She was able to return to her department refreshed and ready to encourage her other colleagues to try it out.

In fact, the class was so popular, that they are now offering is twice a week with different ability levels and plan to offer an outdoor class in March. I love when good things hit the mainstream; what could be better for a corporation than to encourage health to its employees? Healthy, happy employees are better producers and can often be the loudest marketing tool for a company.

It’s important to engage people in what you enjoy. Spread the word, spread the health, spread the healing.
