Embracing Change

I know that living in California makes the changing of seasons a bit of a foreign concept. Here in San Diego we enjoy fairly consistent “beautiful weather”. Even if our climate doesn’t speak of seasons, our lives do.

I was cleaning out a closet last night and the memories came flooding back. There were boxes of pictures that I found myself going through: the day one of my children was born, pictures of me as a child, my wedding day, relatives, and my grandmother in a bathing suit in 1947. Change. Seasons. Time passing.

Change – A Part of Life

Our bodies change – no explanation needed.

Our families change. Kids grow out of diapers and into sports uniforms. They start by drinking milk and suddenly they devour a plate of dinner in 30 seconds flat.

Our family dynamics change. We fall in and out of love and ride the roller coaster of life. We experience the pain of divorce and have to reposition ourselves and rebalance. Loved ones pass away and there is an empty seat at the table. Kids move out and into dorm rooms or apartments or tiny spaces over garages.

Embrace Change

Most of us resent change, mostly because it comes without asking. It doesn’t bother to stop and knock at the door, but bursts in unannounced.

What if we embraced change? What if we accepted it, albeit resistantly. What if we learned to bend and sway with change and to ride the waves instead of being battered by them? What if we allowed change to make its home in our house, not as an invader, but a member: acknowledged, respected, even welcomed?

Learn to bend, in life, in love, in body. Yoga is the practice of flexibility and focus, in body and life.
